Approaches to Monitoring Organic Environmental Contaminants in Food

چکیده

Trace quantities of potentially toxic organic compounds are frequently found in the environment. These compounds sometimes possess properties that may have teratogenic, mutagenic, and even carcinogenic effects on humans and animals. Some of the compounds, such as pesticides, have been intentionally released into the environment (1), while others have found their way into the environment by accident, through carelessness, or as byproducts of industrial processes. Many of these compounds are subject to breakdown in the environment as a result of both physiochemical and biological processes, such as chemical weathering, photodecomposition, metabolism, and biodegradation by micro-organisms (1,2). In many cases, it is not uncommon for the breakdown products to have greater health effects on humans and animals, than the parent compounds. Because of the potentially toxic properties of so many of these compounds and their breakdown products, several pieces of Federal legislation have been enacted in recent years to monitor, evaluate, and control the amounts of the pollutants in order to protect our health and environment. As a result, monitoring ] (screening) programs have been established for many types of organic pollutants in the environment. All of these programs rely heavily on the ability of analysts to correctly identify and quantify these compounds at the parts per million (ppm) and parts per billion (ppb) levels in a variety of sample matrices (3). A small subsurface ion mobility spectrometer sensor for detecting environmental soil-gas contaminants.

A small subsurface ion mobility spectrometer (SS-IMS) was constructed and tested with several environmental contaminants to determine its potential for monitoring gaseous volatile organic compounds in the vadose zone. Trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) were detected and separated in IMS for the first time. Detection limits as low as 1 part per billion volume-to-volume (ppb(v)...

Monitoring of persistent organic pollutants in the polar regions: knowledge gaps & gluts through evidence mapping.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are widespread compounds that accumulating in polar regions canalise through trophic webs. Although several dozens of studies have been carried out in the last decades, the information is generally scattered across a large number of literature sources. This does not allow an efficient synthesis and constraints our understanding on how address future monitori...

Efficiency of Coagulation and Flocculation Process Combined with Chemical Sequestration in Removal of Organic and Inorganic Contaminants from Aautomotive Industry Sewag

Introduction: The most important environmental problem of automotive industries is the produced wastewater due to its various processes. The flocculation and coagulation along with chemical sequestration are among important processes for removing contaminants from wastewaters. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficiency of coagulation and flocculation process along with chemical sequ...

Identifying Bioaccumulative Halogenated Organic Compounds Using a Nontargeted Analytical Approach: Seabirds as Sentinels

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are typically monitored via targeted mass spectrometry, which potentially identifies only a fraction of the contaminants actually present in environmental samples. With new anthropogenic compounds continuously introduced to the environment, novel and proactive approaches that provide a comprehensive alternative to targeted methods are needed in order to more...
